This is so cool. I have an genetic anemic condition referred to as beta thalassemia trait....it's very common to people decendent from mediterranean countries (The side this disease is riding on is Polish, so I am guessing someone married a gypsy). I am impressed that there is a website and a center devoted to this condition...thankfully I don't have the type that requires blood transfusion and an early grave...but it is a concern. Anyway, I found an interesting tidbit on the site, refering to an interesting theory that those with the condition I have (the trait) tend to recover from malaria more often than those who do carry this trait.

I also learned that thalassemia means "anemia by the sea." Smirk, sounds like a good title for a book or movie.
