"Americans concentrate too much on plot." Well really what else are we going to do...we NEED plot. It's what makes the film go...it's like gas. Sure it's not the only thing...but jesus...something. I saw the Virgin Suicides last night, Sofia Coppola's latest film. It was okay..but no plot. With nothing really to focus on you just waited and anctipated the suicides...becoming a little aggravated cause they weren't coming soon enough. No explainations, no peeking into their world...nothing...no motivators. So all the europeans that visit this wee place o mine, explain to me the merits of a plotless movie. What does the above statement mean to you?

Now I could see if plot development was the only thing moving the movie...any extreme in that regard is bad. In a movie unless you know what you're doing..and are a film making genius, few even come close...you could get away with a little extremism in plot, or characterization, or cinematography. And that only follows depending on what the film is about et al. You just can't decide "oh I am going to make a eurpoean plotless wasteland" no...you have develop all the facets. Your characters, your music, costuming, set, imagery, story, PLOT, characterisation, everything...create reality...create believabity. That is what makes a movie good, brilliant/powerful, not only drawing the audience in but making them believe in it. Even slime throwing aliens and boat sinking icebergs can be real and tangable...if my op is followed.
