Hair Tales

I've been asked what I have been doing with my hair and I figured I'd let y'all in on my "secret."

For almost a year I have been moderately obsessed with my hair. It's a big change. Previously, I bought what ever was cheaper and usually kept it in a pony tail or updo and every so often threatened to shave it off. My hair was blah and aggravating. It was stringy and straight. I never got compliments on my hair.

Then one day after a shower I got busy and forgot to comb my hair. Later, when I had time to look in the mirror, I saw a profusion of waves and curls! Huh? This was the first indication that maybe I don't have straight hair after all.

So I switched to a curly shampoo and found a gel that was supposed to activate curls. It worked well enough, but I was hungry for more. My good friend L, has curly hair and she lent me a book that changed my hair outlook: Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey. I also found a group on Ravelry called Naturally Curly Crafters. Between these two resources, my hair has been transformed. I get compliments all the time--even on "bad" hair days. It's unbelievable.

I learned that shampoos with sulfates in them are too harsh for my hair (and might be too hair for everyone's hair esp. the curly...makes it frizzy and flaky) and the silicones in conditioners and most styling products cause build up that you need harsh detergents to wash out. I use what they call a lop poo shampoo with no sulfates (Burt's Bees) when my hair is really oily. In fact I only wash my scalp and not the ends of my hair with this. I make sure I give my scalp a good massage to clear my scalp of debris, skin, and oil. Then I use a -cone free conditioner--Suave Naturals is GREAT not only inexpensive but -cone free. I also use this conditioner to wash my hair and as a leave in. I also use Loreal Pro Vive as a plain old moisturizer. After my shower I put it up in aa turban while I dress then I scrunch in a home made flax seed gel and sometimes pure aloe gel. And voila! My hair routine.

The other night I treated my hair to a deep conditioning treatment of honey and olive oil (1/2 cup of honey and 2 table spoons of olive oil; massaged into hair, left to set for 30 minutes and then rinsed off) My hair LOVED it and went from pretty wavy to spiral curls)

These two websites are GREAT resources for the Curly Girl and Guy. Live Curly Live Free and Naturally Curly.
