Social In-Security

I've been a bit behind in the news, but I have gotten several of those "sign this petition" emails urging me to sign to let Bush know we don't want illegals to get social security benefits. For the moment I am going to ignore the obvious racism or is it nationalism?? I want to talk about Social Security.

I fully accept that I will not be able to enjoy any sort of benefits. And at this stage in my life I don't mind the fact (too much) that I am paying for my grandma's benefits. My husband and I have a retirement plan completely separate from the government. Because we DON'T work for the government I don't expect them to assist me in my retirement. Frankly I don't understand why any one does. I miss the American spirit of independence: The idea of standing on your own two feet and providing for yourself. Never expect to be given anything...especially welfare from the government.

Remember the parable of the Ant and the Grasshopper? The Ants toiled all summer to collect food for the winter. The Grasshopper played all summer, daring to say winter was never coming. In fact, the Grasshoper laughed to see how hard the Ants were working. When winter came as it inevitably and inexorably does, the ants had plenty of food and shelter against the scarcity of food and harsh cold. Meanwhile, the Grasshopper began to starve and freeze, because he played all summer and ignored the future. Now this parable ends with the Ants taking the Grasshopper in and providing for his needs AND the Grasshopper learning his lesson.

If people live for the present and ignore the future then they will starve when the "Winter" comes. And it's their own fault if this happens. I am not sure us ants will want to provide for these layabouts.

I believe in choice. I believe everyone has a choice--a say in his life. After all this is America the Land of Opportunity (which is why we DO have a problem with illegals--if they wanted benefits and to be taken care of then they would keep on going to Canada) and if we want something and work hard for it we will get it. We don't HAVE to be poor and uneducated with jobs that do nothing but provide survival and nothing else.

You choose your future with EVERY choice you make.

Now to the illegals...I wish it was easier for honest immigrants to gain citizenship--these people are not lazy...they work HARD--for the most part they are loyal, honorable people who are an asset to the United States. If we really wanted to keep them out...it would be better in the long run to offer help to Mexico to help their country be a place to stay instead of a place to leave. Our country is made up entirely (except for the Native Americans) of immigrants...this is what made our country STRONG.
