Scarves

When did people begin wearing the scarves doubles over with the tails stuck through the loop? I've only noticed this rhis year or so...maybe last year. And I know scarves have existed for at least a hundred years...possibly longer. Why haven't I seen this before. Is it a new thing or am I really that blind??
