Flight of the Butterfly

I woke this morning to a butterfly fluttering in its mason jar! And it is definately a black swallowtail. We quickly took the jar outside and took off the cover--it was definately to big for that jar! We put the jar on its side and let the butterfly climb out...where it hopped to a wooden garden log and rested for nearly an hour and a half...we recorded it and even managed to capture it's taking it's maiden flight.

And so saying goodbye forever--Micci was really sad to see it go.

It took about 11 days to turn into a butterfly...which is in the range it's supposed to be. Pretty cool.

Right now I am hypothesizing that the butterfly was a female--it's got lot's of blue, but also lot's of yellow. But I could be wrong. In any case this has been a great learning experience for me and Micci and since I recorded it, Mic will get to relearn it in a few years when he does a butterfly unit.
