To burn or not to burn--that is the question
Okay...so here we go again. Let's amend the constitution so that burning the American flag is illegal. Before I start my argument...isn't there more important things going on right now that should precede this sort of foolishness. I am glad our leaders have this much spare time on their hands and all the other serious national matters are taken care of.
I am not even going to go into the free speech rights here. My problem is let's enforce the current flag "laws." Which does include burning the flag as a way of disposing a tattered or defiled flag. When we read The flag code of the united States -- Public Law 94-344, we realize that every day we see some sort of defilement of the flag...when people display it on their cars and let it tatter and fade the in the wind for weeks on end. When they WEAR it. Pay special attention to section 4: no wearing it, no displaying it wear it'll get easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way. The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. And to come to my point The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
Now these laws should be enforce and punished if broken. Fines for all the and firms and companies that use the flag in their marketing campaigns. Fines for drivers with flags tattering in the wind attached to the roof of the car. Fines for everyone that has a flag t-shirt or skirt or pants or hat. Now that should help solve the federal budget deficit.
Here's a better article about the amendment. Actually tells us the new line added to the constitution, but it's awful vague. It's doesn't actually say it will outlaw burning...just defilement. "The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States." I hate vagueness.
